Frank Trevino (Illumulus) – Space, Smart Cities, Digital Transformation, Human Progress

Overview

Frank Trevino, space strategist, digital transformation expert, and managing partner at Illumulus, joins Scott Firsing for a wide-ranging conversation on space, technology, smart cities, sustainability, innovation, and the future of humanity both on Earth and beyond.

A proud Texan originally from the Houston area, Frank shares his journey from growing up near Johnson Space Center and being surrounded by NASA culture to building a career spanning advertising, marketing, strategy, technology, smart cities, sustainability, and the global space ecosystem. His story highlights an important message: there is no single path into the space industry. You do not have to be an engineer or scientist to contribute. Today’s space economy also needs creative thinkers, communicators, strategists, analysts, entrepreneurs, and multidisciplinary leaders.

Scott and Frank discuss how Frank’s early exposure to NASA and the space shuttle era shaped his interest in the sector, even as his career initially moved in a more creative direction. From The University of Texas at Austin to the University of Houston and later studies at Oxford, Frank’s path reflects the importance of reinvention, calculated risk-taking, and lifelong learning. His experience working across Texas, Colorado, South Korea, Europe, and Africa also highlights the value of international exposure and cross-cultural understanding in today’s interconnected world.

A central theme of the episode is Frank’s ability to connect the worlds of space and smart cities. He explains how both are built around complex systems, digital platforms, data, sustainability, and human-centered design. The conversation explores how cities have evolved from early “smart city” ideas focused on sensors and data collection to more advanced concepts like platform urbanism, which emphasizes privacy, ethics, quality of life, and the human experience.

Frank explains how data can improve infrastructure, planning, sustainability, and decision-making, while emphasizing that technology must ultimately serve people. The discussion then expands to how lessons from smart cities and digital transformation can be applied to space-based systems such as Earth observation, satellite data, climate insights, agricultural intelligence, methane tracking, and space situational awareness.

Frank also shares why he is excited about the future of cislunar development, lunar habitats, and the long-term planning needed to support human activity on the Moon as a stepping stone to Mars. He explains that modern space activity is about far more than rockets and launches. It now includes data, AI, satellites, commercialization, private investment, microgravity research, and entirely new business models.

Scott and Frank also discuss the rapid commercialization of the space sector, including private companies building the next generation of space stations, lunar missions, and orbital infrastructure. Over the past two decades the industry has shifted from government-dominated programs with long timelines to a faster-moving ecosystem driven by entrepreneurs, venture capital, and public-private partnerships.

For students and young professionals, the episode offers practical advice. Frank encourages listeners to stay curious, ask questions, seek mentors, build strong networks, and remain open to change. Careers are rarely straight lines, and curiosity and adaptability often lead to unexpected opportunities.

Topics include space industry careers, NASA, Johnson Space Center, smart cities, digital transformation, sustainability, platform urbanism, Earth observation, satellite data, space situational awareness, lunar habitats, cislunar infrastructure, commercial space, private investment, global innovation, mentorship, and the future of human-centered technology.
